Homework Centre
Wellington Somali Council Refugee Homework Centre
The Wellington Somali Council runs a homework centre for high school students on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Arlington Community Centre on Taranaki street from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. The homework centre is a free service that is open to all high school students in Wellington who come from a refugee background. The centre aims to provide a supportive, encouraging learning environment for refugee students. We have a variety of reference books and resources, internet access and a number of wonderful volunteer tutors who are eager to answer questions and assist students with their homework.
At present we have approximately 40 students enrolled at the centre, coming from a variety of different backgrounds including Somalia, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Palestine, Iraq, China, and New Caledonia. Our tutors also come from a variety of different places, including New Zealand, Somalia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Sri Lanka, and Syria. Our tutors currently attend on a voluntary basis and come with a great variety in academic levels. Some of our tutors are university students or have full time jobs, others are senior students at high school who are confident enough to help their younger peers.
The homework centre runs twice a week, on Tuesday and Thursday from 4-6pm during the school term. The homework centre also occasionally organizes extra-curricular activities such as bowling, movies, camps, and prize distributions for recognizing and rewarding hard working students.
We are always looking for more tutors and students to join our team at the homework club. If you are interested in finding out more about us, please call us on 380 2450 or 380 2451. Email Sunayana Mukherjee or Saida Sheikh, our Homework Centre Coordinators at sunayana.mukherjee@somalinz.org, saida.sheikh@somalinz.org, or wsc@somalinz.org for more information.
